Teaching CollocationsTeaching Collocations

This volume contains papers by a number of teachers and theoreticians interested in the practical classroom implications of incorporating collocation into everyday classroom teaching. The book is designed to: provide a perspective on collocation; provide practical ways of introducing the idea to students; give examples of good classroom practice; describe teachers' experiences; give examples of good practice from teachers' own experience; show practical classroom activities; and help students get the most out of their vocabulary notebooks.

Physical Geodesy - Second Edition (2005)

Physical Geodesy - Second Edition (2005)"Physical Geodesy", published in 1967, has for many years been considered as the standard introduction to its field. The enormous progress since then has required a complete reworking. While basic material has been retained other parts are completely updated. However, there is a seamless welding of new ideas and methods (GPS, satellites, collocation). Highlights include: emphasis on global integration of geometry and gravity, a simplified approach to Molodensky's theory without integral equations, and a general combination of all geodetic data by least-squares collocation. In the second edition minor mistakes have been corrected.

A Dictionary of English Collocations

A Dictionary of English CollocationsThis dictionary presents a complete listing of the collocations in the Brown Corpus, which is the standard American corpus containing one million words of text from many different genres dating from 1961. Collocations, as defined by the author, are recurring sequences of grammatically well-formed items. They make up the building blocks of the native speaker's mental lexicon and hence are an essential element of linguistic competence. Examples of collocations are: at the outset, could be expected to, not significantly different from, peaceful coexistence, powdered coffee, and with great difficulty. The dictionary lists some 85,000 collocational types; for each collocation there are statistics showing its frequency, distribution, and degree of prominence. It will be an invaluable reference source for researchers in linguistics, English-language teaching, lexicography, stylistics, and automatic language analysis.
