The papers in this collection are further enquiries into issues raised by Professor Henry Widdowson in Explorations in Applied Linguistics.
The papers range from descriptive to pedagogic issues and they are concerned with the formulation of a relevant model of language which will serve as a source of reference for a principled approach to language teaching.
There are six sections:
Theory and practice (Chapters 1-3)
Discourse: the use of written language (Chapters 4-7)
Discourse: schema, procedure, and sign (Chapters 8-9)
Is native speaker variation in understanding complex sentences due to
individual differences in working memory capacity or in syntactic
competence? The answer to this question has very important consequences
for both theoretical and applied concerns in linguistics and education.
This book is distinctive in giving an historical and interdisciplinary
perspective on the rule- based and experience-based debate and in
supporting an integrated account. In the study reported here, variation
was found to be due to differences in syntactic competence and the
author argues that sentence comprehension is a learned skill,
displaying many of the general characteristics of cognitive skills. The
book will be stimulating reading for psycholinguists, theoretical
linguists, applied linguists and educators.
The Handbook of Applied Linguistics The Handbook of Applied Linguistics is a collection of over 30 original articles that provide a comprehensive and up-to-date picture of the field of applied linguistics. The Handbook is divided in parts that demonstrate the two main approaches to the field: applications of linguistics to real world language data with the purpose of further understanding language and evaluating linguistic theory; and the problem based approach that investigates real world language with the purpose of understanding language use and ameliorating social problems.
The Encyclopedia of Applied Psychology encompasses applications of psychological knowledge and procedures in all areas of psychology. This compendium is a major source of information for professional practitioners, researchers in psychology, and for anyone interested in applied psychology. The topics included are, but are not limited to, aging (geropsychology), assessment, clinical, cognitive, community, counseling, educational, environmental, family, industrial/organizational, health, school, sports, and transportation psychology.
Applied Linguistics Applied Linguistics investigates real-world problems involving language. As such it has the difficult task of mediating between academic expertise and lived experience, attempting to reconcile opposed interests and perspectives. This clearly written introduction provides a concise but comprehensive overview of the most pressing and controversial issues surrounding contemporary language use today, including intercultural communication, political persuasion, new technologies, the growth of English, language in education, and foreign language teaching and learning.
