Karl Popper is best known for his contributions to the philosophy of science and the history of ideas. Elements of Popper's thought were clearly libertarian or conservative in character. His politics, however, were recognisably social democratic. His ideal of an open society was not a free market utopia, but a political community in which diverse people engaged with one another in constructive dialogue to seek political solutions to common problems.

After Rain consists of 12 short stories of love and disillusion by one of the current masters of fiction, William Trevor. Among the stories are "The Piano Tuner's Wife," which tells of a woman who lies to her blind husband; "Marrying Damian," in which an elderly married couple overlook their past differences; and the title story, a tale of a woman's vacation in Italy and the revelations of her heart. Each carefully crafted story offers a glimpse into another world that somehow reminds us of our own.
Reconnecting Language: Morphology and Syntax in Functional Perspectives
The functional perspective on language which underlies the contributions to this volume calls for abandoning the "isolationist" approach which has characterized much of 20th-century linguistics and for a return to an integrated approach.
Grade 4–6 — In this follow-up to The Sisters Club, the two oldest Reel girls, Alex, 13, the actor in the family, and Stevie, 11, the singer, clash when they both try out for the lead role in a school production of Once Upon a Mattress. As in the earlier title, Stevie is the main narrator, in standard chapters; Alex's sections are in the form of scripts, complete with stage directions; nine-year-old Joey keeps a journal and makes lists, which she illustrates with doodles. The story is believable, as are the sisters' interactions. The different styles add to the fun and help move the plot along quickly.
