Swallows and Amazons begins with the four Walker children, John, Susan, Titty and Roger, holidaying with their mother, infant sister Brigit and a nurse at Holly Howe, a farmhouse on the shores of an unnamed lake in the English Lake District. Receiving permission from their absent father, Commander Walker R.N., they set sail in the dinghy Swallow to camp on a deserted island further down the lake.
Swallowdale begins with the four Swallows sailing towards Wild Cat Island. A year has past, the summer holidays have come again, and they are anticipating renewal of their alliance with the Amazons and their friendship with Captain Flint. Their plans, however, are soon interrupted. Firstly, both their allies and Captain Flint are trapped at Beckfoot by the Amazons' fearsome Great Aunt Maria. Then, when they do briefly escape, John wrecks Swallow, leaving the Walkers unable to camp on the Island.
Young architect Michael Hillyard and artist Nancy McAllister are determined to get married despite his wealthy mother's disapproval. Then, minutes before their wedding, a terrifying accident and a cruel deception separate Michael and Nancy -- perhaps forever. Each pursues a new life -- Nancy in California, Michael in New York. But eventually nothing -- and no one -- can keep them apart as they keep their vow never to say good-bye.
