The Greek islands, sun-drenched and tranquil, evoke pictures from a tourist brochure. It takes a special imagination to dredge their blood-soaked history when, as a subject land in WW II, island revolts were crushed by the occupying Germans. In those days, Hugh Lomax was sent by the British to aid the Greeks in their struggle. He succeeded brilliantly, but on leaving for another assignment was betrayed. Those who collaborated with him were executed and survivors, not unnaturally, held Lomax responsible for the carnage.
Word Power (Vocabulary Enrichment Activities, Grades 4-5)
Each book in the Word Power series provides 22 activities which introduce more than 60 challenging new words chosen from popular literature at the designated level. This mode of selection expands the conventional basal vocabularies and ensures the usefulness of words learned. Three two-page reviews reinforce learning. Activity pages introduce new words in context. Reinforcement is provided in student activities matching words with their meanings, aphabetizing words, matching words with their antonyms, and completing puzzles. All lessons are teacher-created. The teaching guide includes a list of source books for each level.
Literary Praxis: A Conversational Inquiry into the Teaching of Literature explores the teaching of literature in secondary schools. It does this from the vantage point of educators in a range of settings around the world, as they engage in dialogue with one another in order to capture the nature of their professional commitment, the knowledge they bring to their work as literature teachers, and the challenges of their professional practice as they interact with their students. The core of the book comprises accounts of their day-to-day teaching by Dutch and Australian educators.
The contributors to this book make links between the theories that underpin the study of group dynamics and their practical application to the classroom. They provide a comprehensive overview of these theories and their related application, insights into assessment practices for measuring the outcomes of small group learning, outline how group experiences can promote socialization and friendships and demonstrate how interaction style among pupils and teachers is a crucial factor in facilitating learning.
