The Sweet Silvery Sayings of Shakespeare on the Softer Sex (an anthology of passages from Shakespeare)
The anonymous 'Old Soldier' who compiled this anthology of passages from Shakespeare, published in 1877, states in the preface that he was inspired to make his selection by a passage in The Gentle Life: Essays in Aid of the Formation of Character, by the now largely forgotten Victorian essayist James Hain Friswell: 'If a man wanted to make a sugar-sweet book ... let him go through the plays of the great national Poet, and make an extract of those passages wherein he has exalted woman.' In thirty-three sections (four plays are omitted), extensive quotations present examples of 'exalted woman'.
Shakespeare's absolute pre-eminence is simply unparalleled. His plays pack theatres and provide Hollywood with block-buster scripts; his works inspire mountains of scholarship and criticism every year. He has given us many of the very words we speak, and even some of the thoughts we think. Nick Groom and Piero explore how Shakespeare became so famous and influential, and why he is still widely considered the greatest writer ever. They investigate how the Bard has been worshiped at different times and in different places, used and abused to cultural and political ends, and the roots of intense controversies which have surrounded his work.
Drawing together some of the leading academics in the field of Shakespeare studies, this volume examines the commonalities and differences in addressing a notionally ’Celtic’ Shakespeare. Celtic contexts have been established for many of Shakespeare’s plays, and there has been interest too in the ways in which Irish, Scottish and Welsh critics, editors and translators have reimagined Shakespeare, claiming, connecting with and correcting him. This collection fills a major gap in literary criticism by bringing together the best scholarship on the individual nations of Ireland, Scotland and Wales in a way that emphasizes cultural crossovers and crucibles of conflict.
William Shakespeare has undeniably left behind him a legacy of plays and poems that have not only been enjoyed by millions, but shaped the English language into what we know today. This book delves into the works of this legendary playwright, from his histories, comedies and tragedies to his thought-provoking sonnets. Discover the life and times of Shakespeare, Elizabethan England and the theatre best known for showcasing his works: The Globe. This book will also explore the impact that his works have had on today’s world from the theatre world to the glitz of the silver screen.
