Grounding Globalization: Labour in the age of insecurity
Winner of the 2009 Distinguished Scholarly Monograph Prize, awarded by the American Sociological Association Labor and Labor Movements section∗ Claims have been made on the emergence of a new labour internationalism in response to the growing insecurity created by globalization. However, when persons face conditions of insecurity they often turn inwards. The book contains a warning and a sign of hope. Some workers become fatalistic, even xenophobic.
Grounding in English and Arabic News Discourse explores the discourse notion of grounding (viz. the foreground-background structure), and examines it in the various structures that occur in short news texts. A text-level approach to grounding and the differentiation between several core concepts relating to the various textual and non-textual structures, distinguish the book from other approaches in the field.
The book consists of three parts. The first part, entitled 'Play and Grounding' looks at play as a context likely to reveal the essence of grounding. Grounding is the embodiment of understanding things/actions in relation to and/or integrated with their environments. The second part, entitled 'Optimal Experience and Emotion' shows the close association between grounding and emotion. The third part, entitled 'Pedagogy and Technology' elaborates on new technologies (the computer and Internet) and on concepts and pedagogical methodologies supported by such technologies. The contributions in this volume demonstrate the great potential for the further development.
