The Origins of Grammar: Language in the Light of Evolution II
This is the second of the two closely linked but self-contained volumes that comprise James Hurford's acclaimed exploration of the biological evolution of language. In the first book he looked at the evolutionary origins of meaning, ending as our distant ancestors were about to step over the brink to modern language. He now considers how that step might have been taken and the consequences it undoubtedly had. The capacity for language lets human beings formulate and express an unlimited range of propositions about real or fictitious worlds.
Simon Evnine examines various epistemic aspects of what it is to be a person. Persons are defined as finite beings that have beliefs, including second-order beliefs about their own and others' beliefs, and are agents, capable of making long-term plans. It is argued that for any being meeting these conditions, a number of epistemic consequences obtain. First, all such beings must have certain logical concepts and be able to use them in certain ways. Secondly, there are at least two principles governing belief that it is rational for persons to satisfy and are such that nothing can be a person at all unless it satisfies them to a large extent.
Without the ability to grow and harvest crops, permanent civilizations would not have developed. Because societies were dependent on cultivating their crops for food, storage, and trade, harvesting became a sacred event in many cultures. Ancient people believed spirits lived within their crops, and went to great lengths to appease these beings. Although modern thought has evolved since that era, the significance of the harvest has hardly been lost.

There are many unanswered questions and coincidental occurrences. Presented to the reader is the data from history and many ancient texts, which forced us to question our traditional beliefs. This book draws no conclusions but only ask those questions shouting to us from recently unearthed scrolls, which are thousands of years old. Whether one starts with a totally open mind, or with an assumption
