Sundays in America: A Yearlong Road Trip in Search of Christian Faith
It's a fascinating project: attend 52 different churches in one year and report your first impressions. Shea, a New England novelist and former Catholic, engagingly writes of her initial visits to all kinds of churches: Shaker and Baptist, evangelical and mainline, African-American and Caucasian. Sometimes, these well-written first impressions yield intriguing analysis, as when she notes the total absence of children at the Mother Church of Christ, Scientist.
Do you have kids? Do they have any Tintin books? If not, they're missing out on something special. Next birthday or Christmas, pick them up a couple of Tintin books and watch them lose themselves in these fantastic adventures. (Some adventures are spread over two books - make sure you get both parts unless you want a quick trip to the bookstore!) If you can't buy the books, check out your local library. Most carry some of the adventures, and I've seen them in school libraries as well.
Editorial Reviews "The New Global Society" series, according to the foreword, is intended for high school students. Disney's dancing-doll lyrics "it's a small world, after all" are becoming more apt over time, so these books are meant to help youth understand, discuss, and find answers to questions raised by globalization. Yet the introduction to the series claims the books are for lay people. Young adults might find the material somewhat advanced: In this book, the interrelationship between globalization and human rights is examined.
