Critical Companion to Emily Dickinson

Critical Companion to Emily Dickinson"Critical Companion to Emily Dickinson" is an encyclopedic guide to the life and works of Emily Dickinson, one of the most famous and widely studied American poets of the 19th century. Known for her wit and preference for seclusion from the outside world, Dickinson rarely left her home in Amherst, Mass., preferring instead to write quietly from the confines of her bedroom. This new title contains close readings and critical analyses of more than 150 of Dickinson's best-known poems, including "Because I could not stop for Death," "I felt a funeral, in my Brain," "I died for Beauty - but was scarce," and "I like to see it lap the miles."

Discovering Syntax: Clause Structures of English, German and Romance (Studies in Generative Grammar )

Discovering Syntax: Clause Structures of English, German and Romance (Studies in Generative Grammar )The essays in this volume, dating from 1991 onwards, focus on highly characteristic constructions of English, Romance languages, and German. Among clause-internal structures, the most puzzling are English double objects, particle constructions, and non-finite complementation (infinitives, participles and gerunds). Separate chapters in Part I offer relatively complete analyses of each. These analyses are integrated into the framework of Emonds (2000), wherein a simplified subcategorization theory fully expresses complement selection.

Discourse Analysis & the Study of Classroom Language & Literacy Events: A Microethnographic Perspective Discourse Analysis and the Study of Classroom Language and Literacy Events: A Microethnographic Perspective provides a rich discussion of classroom discourse informed by careful and thoughtful analysis thatdraws together scholarly advances in sociocultural analysis, sociolinguistics, positionality, identity, power and meaning making. It offers to the field a book which can serve multiple purposes: an introduction to classroom analysis, a discussion of different lenses for exploring the dynamics of classrooms, an exploration of the key theorists in the aforementioned areas, and examples of classroom discourse with analyses that researchers and practitioners can use as the basis for pursuing their own analyses. At the same time, it represents a somewhat rare contribution....collaboration among school-based educators with university scholars. This volume is a timely and significant addition to the field.

New Horizons in the Study of Language and Mind

New Horizons in the Study of Language and MindThis book is an outstanding contribution to the philosophical study of language and mind, by one of the most influential thinkers of our time. In a series of penetrating essays, Chomsky cuts through the confusion and prejudice that has infected the study of language and mind, bringing new solutions to traditional philosophical puzzles and fresh perspectives on issues of general interest, ranging from the mind-body problem to the unification of science. Using a range of imaginative and deceptively simple linguistic analyses, Chomsky defends the view that knowledge of language is internal to the human mind. He argues that a proper study of language must deal with this mental construct. According to Chomsky, therefore, human language is a "biological object" and should be analyzed using the methodology of the sciences. His examples and analyses come together in this book to give a unique and compelling perspective on language and the mind.
