AS the name indicates, the family of Dante Gabriel Rossetti is of Italian origin. On the paternal side the painter-poet belongs to Vasto d'Ammone, the ancient Histonium, a small, secluded, and picturesquely situated city of the Abruzzi, on the Adriatic coast of the then kingdom of Naples. The name Rossetti, though borne in Italy by several men who attained eminence in painting or music was not originally that of the family to which it owes its highest honours. The primary name of this was Delia Guardia.

Recollections of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1883)

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (12 May 1828 – 9 April 1882) was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement.
