Michael Swan is a writer specializing in English language teaching and reference materials. His publications include Practical English Usage and Basic English Usage (OUP). He is also co-author, with Catherine Walter, of the Cambridge English Course series, and of How English Works and The Good Grammar Book (OUP). His interests include pedagogic grammar, mother-tongue influence in second language acquisition, and the relationship between applied linguistic theory and classroom language-teaching practice, and he has published a number of articles on these topics.

Michael has had extensive experience with adult learners and has worked with teachers in many countries. He is a Visiting Professor at St Mary's College, University of Surrey.

Practical English Usage is a reference book aimed at non-native speakers of English written by Michael Swan. It features basic descriptions of English grammar and various words which for some reasons are difficult to use by non-native speakers. It has been published by Oxford University Press. It has been sold in over 1.5 million copies.
