Alternative Linguistics: Descriptive and Theoretical Modes

The papers in this volume were presented at the Fifth Biennial Symposium of the Department of Linguistics, Rice University, March 1993. The participants were asked to concentrate in depth and in a self-reflective way upon some range of data. The intent was multifold. The first purpose was descriptive. It was expected that the participants would carry out their task in a retrospective way, exemplifying and building upon their previous work, but it was also expected that they would begin to demonstrate the configuration of some area in a more comprehensive picture of language.

Daisy starts thinking about what things would REALLY be like if she and Dad changed places. She could feed Dad sticky oatmeal while she ate chocolate and dress him all in pink! Whoever invented skateboarding is a genius. There's only one skater, and his name's Tony Hawk. It doesn't matter if you don't know who he is, just trust me. Not only is Hawk the world's best skater, he's also good to talk to. So I talk to Tony Hawk, and Tony Hawk talks back. Because just when it seemed like everything had come together for me, I had to go and screw it all up. It only took two seconds. But all of me knew. One risk. One mistake and my life would never be the same. Hawk had a few things to say. And a few things to show me. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see your own future?

Isaac Asimov - The Return of the Black WidowersUntil his death in 1992, author Isaac Asimov would write more than 120 ingenious tales of detection and deduction, and in 66 of them he would present his armchair detectives, the Black Widowers, with the mind-teasing puzzles that they would strive to solve in often-quarrelsome conversation. The Black Widowers club is meeting again. In a private dining room at New York's luxurious Milano restaurant, the six brilliant men once more gather for fine fare served impeccably by their peerless waiter, Henry.

How to Tell a Story that Helps People Change It was David Gordon that 'cracked the code' on Milton Erickson's storytelling Milton would tell someone a story, assign a task, (or send them out to climb Squaw Peak) and this would lead them to change. Now you can learn how to do the same. There is tremendous power in a well told story. If I'm in the middle of a personal crisis or am facing an important decision and you are able to tell me a story that is close to mine you have my complete attention. For me Your story can become a Metaphor.David Gordon first made his reputation in NLP with his work in the area of metaphors.
