Solid State Physics emphasizes a few fundamental principles and extracts from them a wealth of information. This approach also unifies an enormous and diverse subject which seems to consist of too many disjoint pieces. The book starts with the absolutely minimum of formal tools, emphasizes the basic principles, and employs physical reasoning (" a little thinking and imagination" to quote R. Feynman) to obtain results.

Set during the time of the American Civil War, this story is about a man named Peyton Farquhar, a Confederate sympathizer who attempted to demolish the Owl Creek Bridge, but was caught and condemned to die by hanging. But all is not what it seems to be in this tale that has an irregular time sequence and a twist ending
It's set in the years 1883-1942 and is basically about a woman who marries late in life (27, old at that time). she finally meets and marries a man who on paper, seems to be a good match. But she finds that he's more interested in his work than her and she's just as lonely as she was before they married. I don't want to give too much away but this is a great historical fiction book by a talented author. The main character seems never to get a break as one tragedy after another seem to follow her from beginning to end. Definitely one of those books that left me wanting more.
If you are hunting for a terrific graduate-level text in microeconomic theory, pick up Varian's 3rd Ed. Microeconomic Analysis. The book is rigorous, but not at all overwhelming, and is replete with the kinds of exciting results that made you major in economics as an undergraduate. Moreover, the book is concise -- the author seems to recognize that taking a long time to explain relatively straightforward concepts is not a way to endear onesself to one's readers.
