Phonetics is a subject that if poorly taught can seem austere and difficult. ‘Doc’ O’Connor, who has died of pneumonia aged 78, was a phonetician whose lectures were witty and effortlessly informative, and whose writing was elegant and readable. Generations of students continue to be grateful to his textbooks - particularly his Penguin Phonetics and, for students of English as a second language, his Better English Pronunciation.

Articulatory Phonetics presents a concise and non-technical introduction to the physiological processes involved in producing sounds in human speech. Traces the path of the speech production system through to the point where simple vocal sounds are produced, covering the nervous system, and muscles, respiration, and phonation. Introduces more complex anatomical concepts of articulatory phonetics and particular sounds of human speech, including brain anatomy and coarticulation.
Above and Beyond the Segments presents a unique collection of experimental linguistic and phonetic research. Mainly, it deals with the experimental approach to prosodic, and more specifically melodic, aspects of speech. But it also treats segmental phonetics and phonology, second language learning, semantics and related topics. Apart from European languages and dialects (including Dutch, English, Greek, Danish, and dialects from Italy and The Netherlands) there also are chapters on regions as widespread as China, Russia, South Africa, South Sudan, and Surinam. These all testify the enormous diversity of language and speech in the world.
