Seeing, hearing, and writing vocabulary words in context is the proven method used in these books. Grades 10–12 texts contain a Word Analyzer with Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots that help determine the meaning of new words. In grades 7–9, spelling words illustrate the “Four Spelling Rules to Master” at the front of the book, and commonly misspelled words are also studied.
Many of the commonly misspelled words plaguing America also annoy UK writers. In fact, 8 of the 15 most misspelled words in there are on the American list of misspelled words.
English spelling is extremely complex because it owes so much to other languages. There are rules but unfortunately there are just as many exceptions to the rules. This book has been written in an attempt to help you sort out the problems. It gives examples of spelling variations and lists of frequently misspelled words as well as providing you with some fascinating background information on the origin of certain words.
