The MathThematics program is a complete mathematics curriculum that promotes student success and engages students in learning by using a thematic approach, active learning, and varied practice and assessment. The mathematics content for each level is presented in one book containing eight thematic modules that connect the mathematical ideas to real-world applications. Each modules contains four to six sections, an Extended Exploration, a Module Project, and a Review and Assessment. This book is a collection of research work done in different parts of the worldwith one common goal – to enhance teaching and learning through technology. Content interaction and learning support are some of the key issues in the book. Many of the contributors worked together, so to speak, in cyber space as a result of technological advances. Many got to know one another through conferences we attended since the late 90’s. Many of the ideas in the book were presented at ICT2006 and ICT2007. The conference attracted about 300 researchers and practitioners around the world annually. One of the authors of Chapter One was indeed a keynote speaker from the conference.
These are exciting and challenging times for education. The demands of a global society have changed the requirements for educated people; we now need to learn new skills continuously during our lifetimes, analyze quickly, make clear judgments, and exercise great creativity. We need to work both independently and in collaboration and to create engaging learning communities. Yet the current educational establishment is not up to these challenge; students work in isolation on repetitive assignments, in classes and schedules fi xed in place and time. Technologic and scientific innovations promise to dramatically enhance exiting learning methods.
