Longman English Grammar
Alexander's "Longman English Grammar" is among the best of its type I have seen, though not without some drawbacks.
The coverage is exceptionally comprehensive, going over a large number of structures and forms that will keep most students going for a long time. The covers not only the main structures, but also some more specialised forms that students may need to be familiar with.
The explanations are generally easy to understand, though sometimes they get a little confusing. The examples provided are excellent and they often clear up any points of confusion that the explanations may have left the reader with.
The Little Riding Hood (Classics Illustrated : No. 510 )
The story revolves around a girl called Little Red Riding Hood, after the red hooded cape she wears. The girl walks through the woods to deliver food to her sick grandmother.
A wolf wants to eat the girl but is afraid to do so in public. He approaches Little Red Riding Hood and she naïvely tells him where she is going. He suggests the girl pick some flowers, which she does. In the meantime, he goes to the grandmother's house and gains entry by pretending to be the girl. He swallows the grandmother whole, and waits for the girl, disguised as the grandmother.
The White War - Life and Death on the Italian Front 1915 - 1919
So why should you read this book? Well it gives you a clear account of one part of the wider First World War front that is only now becoming clear and even possible to study. (Attempts to clear the names of those summarily executed is still politically sensitive in Italy.) But a more important reason is that it offers insights into the conduct of events now. If History has anything to teach, its that we the ordinary people wont get a true picture what our masters have been doing in our name until we are pushing up the daisies.. In knowing what was going on behind closed doors then, we can question what the media, cultural elites, military strategists, politicians are doing now.
Regenerating the Heart: Stem Cells and the Cardiovascular System
Medical research made huge strides in treating heart disease in the 20th century, from drug-eluding stents to automatic internal defibrillators. Public awareness of the dangers of heart disease has never been more pervasive. Now, though, ten years into a new millennium, scientists are gearing up for the next great challenges in tackling this pervasive condition. Cell therapy is going to be a key weapon in the fight against heart disease. It has the potential to address many cardiovascular conditions.
