The tales of The Silmarillion were the underlying inspiration and source of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing; he worked on the book throughout his life but never brought it to a final form. Long preceding in its origins The Lord of the Rings, it is the story of the First Age of Tolkien's world, the ancient drama to which characters in The Lord of the RIngs look back and in which some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part.

The Broken Sword
Thor has broken the sword Tyrfing so that it cannot strike at the roots of Yggdrasil, the tree that binds together earth, heaven, and hell. But now the mighty sword is needed again to save the elves in their war against the trolls, and only Skafloc, a human child kidnapped and raised by the elves, can hope to persuade Bölverk the ice-giant to make Tyrfing whole again. ‘Birth of the Half Elves’ is the first of six books in the ‘Elven Age Saga.’ It takes place on the planet Ryyah. The tale begins when the human youth Donovan’s quiet village is overtaken by barbarians. Catching the people off guard the barbarians attack the town while the men are out on a salmon fishing expedition. These barbarians are slavers looking for women and young men to capture. After they initiate their attack on these peaceful people, the only remaining survivors are the women and the young men deemed fit enough to sell into slavery.
