The Discourse of Medicine: Dialectics of Medical Interviews
This is the first full-length monograph devoted to the study of the talk between physicians and patients in a medical interview. Methods are developed to describe, analyze and interpret the discourse. Additionally, a ctitique and review of previous research in this area is included. In the course of the work, a critique of more traditional methods, studies, and interpretations of medical interviews is presented.
This edited volume brings together a range of contributions solely on the linguistics of humour. Grounding in English and Arabic News Discourse explores the discourse notion of grounding (viz. the foreground-background structure), and examines it in the various structures that occur in short news texts. A text-level approach to grounding and the differentiation between several core concepts relating to the various textual and non-textual structures, distinguish the book from other approaches in the field.
This book brings together a collection of current research on the assessment of oral proficiency in a second language. Fourteen chapters focus on the use of the language proficiency interview or LPI to assess oral proficiency. The volume addresses the central issue of validity in proficiency assessment: the ways in which the language proficiency interview is accomplished through discourse.Contributors draw on a variety of discourse perspectives, including the ethnography of speaking, conversation analysis, language socialization theory, sociolinguistic variation theory, human interaction research, and systemic functional linguistics.
In this dissertation I introduce and provide a thorough semantic analysis of iscourse Adjectives, a natural class of adjectives that I argue includes apparent, clear, evident, and obvious among its prototypical members. My main claim is that Discourse Adjectives do not provide information about the facts of the world. Rather, they are used by interlocutors to negotiate the status of propositions in a discourse.
