Interpreting Television NewsInterpreting Television News

Television news range among the most extensively investigated topics in communication studies. The book contributes to television news research by focusing on whether and how news viewers who watch the same news program form similar or different interpretations. The author develops a novel concept of interpretation based on cognitive complexity research. He strongly argues that qualitative and quantitative research methods work best if they complement one another.

Ocean Geographic - Issue 36. 2016

Ocean Geographic explores the dynamics of our ocean – the source and cradle of all life on Earth, occupying nearly 70.98 per cent of our planet's surface and provides 99 per cent of the Earth's living space.  Since most life on Earth is aquatic, in terms of both diversity and biomass, Ocean Geographic focuses on getting to know who’s who in the sea, allowing readers to appreciate the complexity of the oceanic life forms that make up the vast biospheres, as well as understanding the environmental influences and climatic conditions that that make this water planet a hospitable place.

Explanation in Phonology

Explanation in PhonologyThe essays reprinted in this volume are concerned with exploring the connections between synchronic phonology and change. The strategy is to identify structure-dependent properties of change and to use them in turn to test hypotheses about structure. For example, if the right way to look at analogical change is not as the projection of surface regularities but as the elimination of arbitrary complexity from the system, in a sense of complexity independently defined in the theory of grammar, then it follows that particular instances of change can show something about the grammars of the languages in question and about the precise way the theory of grammar should be formulated.

The Mind of Egypt: History and Meaning in the Time of the Pharaohs

The Mind of Egypt presents an unprecedented account of the mainsprings of Egyptian civilization--the ideals, values, mentalities, belief systems, and aspirations that shaped the first territorial state in human history. Drawing on a range of literary, iconographic, and archaeological sources, the renowned historian Jan Assmann reconstructs a world of unparalleled complexity, a culture that, long before others, possessed an extraordinary degree of awareness and self-reflection.
