The Vikings of HelgelandThe Vikings of Helgeland

Henrik Ibsen, considered to be the father of modern drama, was a Norwegian playwright. He is responsible for "realistic drama". During the Victorian era Ibsen's writings were considered scandalous. The Vikings of Helgeland was Ibsen's 7th play written in 1857. the island of Helgeland is in the northern part of Norway. The story takes place in the time of Erik the Blood circa 933 A D. The setting is a rocky coastline with several war ships in the distance. The character of Hjdoris was modeled after Ibsen's fiancé Suzannah. Hjdoris is a larger than life character whose strength comes from honor and love. In the play Hjdoris continues to love one man while marring another.

Vikings - A Very Short IntroductionVikings - A Very Short Introduction

The Viking reputation is one of bloodthirsty seafaring warriors, repeatedly plundering the British Isles and the North Atlantic throughout the early Middle Ages. Yet Vikings were also traders, settlers, and farmers, with a complex artistic and linguistic culture, whose expansion overseas led them to cross the Atlantic for the first time in European history. Highlighting the latest archaeological evidence, Julian Richards reveals the whole Viking world: their history, their culture, and their legacy of overseas expansion for trade, colonization, and plunder. Viking identity is explored through what we have learned about their towns, art, shipbuilding, and religious rituals.

Thrall of Leif the LuckyThrall of Leif the Lucky

The Anglo-Saxon race was in its boyhood in the days when the Vikings lived. For every heroic vice, the Vikings laid upon the opposite scale an heroic virtue. They plundered and robbed, as most men did in the times when Might made Right. Yet the heaven-sent instinct of hospitality was in the marrow of their bones. No beggar went from their doors without alms; no traveller asked in vain for shelter. As cunningly false as they were to their foes, just so superbly true were they to their friends. Above all, they were a race of conquerors, whose knee bent only to its proved superior.
