Cold Rain
Life couldn't be better for David Albo, an associate professor of English at a small midwestern university. He lives in an idyllic, out-of-town, plantation-style mansion with a beautiful and intelligent wife and an adoring teenage stepdaughter. As he returns to the university after a long and relaxing sabbatical, there is a full professorship in the offing—and, what's more, he has managed to stay off the booze for two whole years. Cold Rain makes for an absolute gem of a surprise. This is good solid, atmospheric writing piled with suspense and tension.
Eamon Duffy has restored the late medieval period as a subject of serious research through his revolutionary book The Stripping of the Altars (Yale University Press). A young man appears at the door and seems to be the answer to Marina's wishes. She and her husband Tom have moved from London to a quiet village, and Marina is bored with her life, as it seems she does nothing but housework. One day she wishes for somebody to help with the ironing, and the 'ironing man' appears. Not only does he help Marina with the housework, but he also helps Tom realise just how important Marina is to him.
