The Companion to Greek Tragedy

This volume is the product of a group of scholars doing some of the most exciting work on Greek tragedy. They contribute essays on such subjects as the civic context of Athenian theater, Dionysus, the composition of the audience, pictorial representations of tragedy, the sociology of tragedy (gender, class), tragic language, and the construction of the plot, concluding with chapters on modern adaptations and performances and recent critical approaches. Private LifePrivate Life

It's set in the years 1883-1942 and is basically about a woman who marries late in life (27, old at that time). she finally meets and marries a man who on paper, seems to be a good match. But she finds that he's more interested in his work than her and she's just as lonely as she was before they married.
I don't want to give too much away but this is a great historical fiction book by a talented author. The main character seems never to get a break as one tragedy after another seem to follow her from beginning to end. Definitely one of those books that left me wanting more.

Greek Tragedy: Suffering under the SunGreek Tragedy: Suffering under the Sun

This is an invaluable introduction to ancient Greek tragedy which discusses every surviving play in detail and provides all the background information necessary for understanding the context and content of the plays. Edith Hall argues that the essential feature of the genre is that it always depicts terrible human suffering and death, but in a way that invites philosophical enquiry into their causes and effects, This enquiry was played out in the bright sunlight of open-air theatre, which became a key marker of the boundary between living and dead.
