The Future of Human Nature
11

The Future of Human NatureRecent developments in biotechnology and genetic research are raising complex ethical questions concerning the legitimate scope and limits of genetic intervention. As we begin to contemplate the possibility of intervening in the human genome to prevent diseases, we cannot help but feel that the human species might soon be able to take its biological evolution in its own hands. 'Playing God' is the metaphor commonly used for this self-transformation of the species, which, it seems, might soon be within our grasp.
In this important new book, Jurgen Habermas - the most influential philosopher and social thinker in Germany today - takes up the question of genetic engineering and its ethical implications and subjects it to careful philosophical scrutiny. His analysis is guided by the view that genetic manipulation is bound up with the identity and self-understanding of the species. We cannot rule out the possibility that knowledge of one's own hereditary factors may prove to be restrictive for the choice of an individual's way of life and may undermine the symmetrical relations between free and equal human beings.

The Cockroach Papers: A Compendium of History and Lore

The Cockroach Papers: A Compendium of History and LoreThere are a great variety of roach species in the world, though not all of them are pests. The most famous of course are the pest species, including the most common domestic cockroach in the U.S, the German cockroach, (_Blattella germanica_), and the second most common, the American cockroach (_Periplaneta americana_), both the main subjects of the book. Other pest species in North America include the oriental cockroach, brown-banded roach (noted for colonizing appliances), and the smokey-brown, though there are 64 other species on the continent far from the haunts of man. More than 5,000 species of cockroach are known in the order Blattaria (from the Greek word blattae, for roach). Only about a hundred species worldwide occur around humans at all; most live unseen, generally in hot humid jungles though they are found virtually everywhere on Earth.

Thy say that cockroaches will survive the atom bomb. Go figure!

Practical Intelligence: The Art and Science of Common Sense

Practical Intelligence: The Art and Science of Common SenseOne definition of “intelligence” is the capacity to cope: to function effectively in an environment of some kind—to meet its challenges and capitalize on its possibilities in order to get what we want, need, and deserve. By that definition, we Homo sapiens -“thinking humans” - may need to get a lot smarter as a species, and soon. For the first time in the history of our species, our environment is evolving faster than our brains. We might have fewer than fifty years left to get our act together, individually and collectively, to cope with the chaotic new environment we’ve created around ourselves.

Wild Flowers (Pocket Nature)

Wild Flowers (Pocket Nature)This guide covers the 440 most commonly seen wild flower species in northwest Europe.
At the beginning of the book is a short introduction which focuses on the process of identification in the field. For ease of access, the species are then organized into four chapters based on flower colour: Green–White, Yellow–Brown, Red–Pink, and Purple–Blue.
Within these colour groups the flowers are broadly organized by family, so that similar plants are kept together for ease of comparison.

Trees (Pocket Nature)
This guide covers over 300 of the most commonly seen tree species in Europe.
At the beginning of the book is a short introduction which focuses on the process of identification in the field.
The trees are then divided into four easily recognized groups: Conifers with Needles, Conifers with Scales, Broadleaved Simple, Broadleaved Compound.
Within each group, the trees are arranged by family and by genus so that similar looking species appear together for ease of comparison.
