This advanced listening skills book is based on an accompanying cassette of interviews with British people (or people living in Britain). It contains 15 four-page units, each divided into two-page sections which are independent of each other. There are also pre-listening discussions and vocabulary activating tasks, specific listening skills activities (listening for gist and specific information), follow-up reading and writing sections based on the unit topic plus tapescripts, teacher's notes and an answer key.
This text blends theory and practice to present a broad introduction to the practice of teaching English in secondary school classrooms. Taking as its starting point the nature of English as a subject, the book explores how students and practising teachers can monitor and develop their own practice through a range of approaches. Chapters cover the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and there are also sections on drama, poetry, teaching grammar, approaching Shakespeare, and using information technology in the English classroom.
It introduces children to different types of reading text. Speech bubble stories give children the opportunity of acting out the text; 'Colin in Computerland' provides revision and language presentation through an exciting adventure story; and the 'Extended reading' sections include topic-based information, rhymes, and jokes.
