Science and Its Times: Understanding the Social Significance of Scientific Discovery This innovative 7-vol. set offers an exceptional, interdisciplinary approach to learning by integrating two important subjects: science and history.
Each volume focuses on a range of years and includes developments in exploration, life sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and technology.
The volumes are chronologically ordered from 2000 B.C. to the present, addressing a wide variety of scientific developments with explanations of underlying factors and their effects on politics, economics, culture and daily life.
The entries (more than 20 topical essays, 25 full biographies and 85 sketches of notable people in each volume) move forward through history, describing notable scientific discoveries and achievements along with their social and historical impact.
Glossary of Linguistics a glossary that I collected over the years for my own use. Currently it consists of more than 700 terms. Additions, corrections and suggestions are welcome!
Joost van de Weijer
It is sometimes suggested that the terminology, or ‘jargon’, of modern linguistics is unnecessarily complex. This is a criticism which need not detain us long. Every science has its own technical vocabulary: it is only because the layman takes on trust the established sciences, and especially the ‘natural’ sciences, that he does not question their right to furnish themselves with special vocabularies. The technical terms used by linguists arise in the course of their work and are easily understood by those who approach the subject sympathetically and without prejudice.
The MIT encyclopedia of the cognitive sciences
A brief review of the encyclopedia by its authors:
The MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences (MITECS to its friends) has been four years in the making from conception to publication. It consists of 471 concise articles, nearly all of which include useful lists of references and further readings, preceded by six longer introductory essays written by the volume’s advisory editors. We see MITECS as being of use to students and scholars across the various disciplines that contribute to the cognitive sciences, including psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, anthropology and the social sciences more generally, evolutionary biology, education, computer science, artificial intelligence, and ethology.
