Two hundred years old, the "monster", Deucalion, is a monster no more. Literate and intelligent, he arrives in modern-day New Orleans, where he will join forces with a street-smart police detective and her partner on the trail of a macabre serial killer...a serial killer spawned, Deucalion will discover, by his own creator, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, now Victor Helios. Now Deucalion will find that there are many others like him, that they live among us at every strata of society, and that his nemesis, Victor Frankenstein, has survived the centuries as well, and dreams of seeding the earth with his creations.

The aborigine trackers can find no clue to the circumstances of his death, and it is some three weeks and many sand storms later that Detective-Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte, alias Ed Bonnay, arrives to delve into the problem. Bony doesn't make much progress until he deliberately lets it slip that he is a policeman. This really stirs things up. Of course, Bony solves the mystery; does he ever fail? This is not quite as good as a completely Arthur U pfield tale; it drags in parts, but some chapters are very gripping.
Paleo-biologist Jonas Taylor once dared to enter the perilous Mariana Trench, where the Megalodon shark has spawned since the dawn of time, and now that the monster is terrorizing the California coast, he must return to fight his ultimate battle.

In Edgar-winner Rendell's 22nd Inspector Wexford novel, the British police detective confronts a man from his past, Eric Targo, who he suspects is guilty of multiple murders. Years earlier, Targo stalked and taunted Wexford, daring him to press charges. U.S. Marshal Michael Venturi of the Witness Protection Program relocates a mobster, now a government witness, to a small rural town after creating a new identity for him. The man proves to be a monster unleashed on an unsuspecting community.
