The Sand FishThe Sand Fish

Dubai native Gargash weaves an enticing tale of a fiery, independent woman struggling to live the life she has been assigned in the 1950s in the area outside modern Dubai. Noora Al-Salmi is 17. Her mother has died, her father has since gone mad, and her brother, Sager, is trying to provide for her. When Sager hears of a rich pearl merchant looking for a new wife, Noora, unhappy with this plan, escapes to a nearby village where she quickly becomes involved with a man who, unbeknownst to her, is promised to another woman. She returns home to find that Sager has married her off to the merchant.

Shipman's Tale (also called The Sailor's Tale) is one of The Canterbury Tales
Chaucer launches another attack against the Ecclesiastical community by having the Shipman portray a Monk in a most unsavory light. The Monk breaks his vows with God and he shows himself as a manipulator by falsely claiming that he is related to the Merchant.  Not content with taking advantage of the wife’s desperate position regarding money, he betrays her confidence, and his actions risk her unfaithfulness being revealed.

The Merchant's Tale (Canterbury tales )

The Merchant's Tale" is one of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

We have yet another instance of an old foolish man being hoodwinked by a young bride.

The clear moral of the tale here is that an old man should not marry a young bride unless he can satisfy her. Failure to do this will only make a young bride look elsewhere for satisfaction.

The names of the characters are important; January symbolizes the old man, whereas May represents the young woman – Winter against Spring.  Justinius, January’s friend is symbolized as a righteous man whose advice is rejected.

The Merchant of Venice - William Shakespeare (New Edition) (Bloom's Modern Critical Interpretations)

The Merchant of Venice is a richly complicated and, to some, a deeply disturbing work. Several themes are presented within the framework of a traditional comedy that calls for the triumph of young lovers over their restrictive elders. Yet, the play, with its highly debated portrayal of the moneylender Shylock, resists easy categorization, incorporating elements of tragedy and romance in equal portion. This new edition of critical essays features an introduction by Shakespearean scholar Harold Bloom, a chronology of the Bard's life, a bibliography, and an index for quick reference
