Jack the Ripper and the London PressJack the Ripper and the London Press

Filling a perceived gap in Ripperature, Curtis examines how 14 London newspapers covered the Whitechapel murders attributed to Jack the Ripper in 1888. Curtis begins with a brief account of the crimes and a description of the impoverished East End of London, where the murders occurred. Diversity and Difference in Early Modern LondonDiversity and Difference in Early Modern London

London in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was a surprisingly diverse place, home not just to people from throughout the British Isles but to a significant population of French and Dutch immigrants, to travelers and refugees from beyond Europe's borderlands and, from the 1650s, to a growing Jewish community. An Outline of Middle English GrammarAn Outline of Middle English Grammar

Middle English is not a uniform language. Texts from the 11th and 12th centuries still have many forms proper to the IOE standard language, mixed with spellings reflecting changes with had occurred in the meantime. He faces two very different adversaries. The first is a wickedly mischievous swindler and master of disguise. The other is a brutal serial killer - nicknamed The Decorator - who may have more in common with London's Jack the Ripper than just a taste for women of easy virtue. With twists and turns around every corner, Fandorin's powers of detection are tested to the limit.
