Grandma's Pear Tree
Jessie’s ball is stuck in Grandma’s prized pear tree. Worried that Grandma will be mad, Jessie tries to get the ball down by asking for help from busy relatives before Grandma sees the problem. From a shoe to a chicken, each suggestion only seems to make the problem worse. With no other choice, Jessie finally admits to Grandma what has happened. In the end, Jessie learns that working together is best to solve a problem and that family is there to support you when you need them. The art for Grandma’s Pear Tree was first drawn in pencil, and then colored using acrylics.

The Slave DancerThe Slave Dancer

Jessie Bollier often played his fife to earn a few pennies down by the New Orleans docks. One afternoon a sailor asked him to pipe a tune, and that evening Jessie was kidnapped and dumped aboard The Moonlight, a slave ship, where a hateful duty awaited him. He was to play music so the slaves could "dance" to keep their muscles strong, their bodies profitable. Jessie was sickened by the thought of taking part in the business of trading rum and tobacco for blacks and then selling the ones who survived the frightful sea voyage from Africa.

The Mermaid ChairThe Mermaid Chair

Kidd's debut novel, The Secret Life of Bees (2000), is a bona fide publishing success story: it was on the New York Times paperback best-seller list for 81 weeks. Her follow-up, while quite different in plot, shares some themes with its predecessor. Forty-three-year old Jessie Sullivan is pulled out of her staid life in Atlanta with her husband and daughter, back to her childhood home on Egret Island after her mother, Nelle, cuts off one of her own fingers. Jessie has been uneasy with the island since her beloved father died when she was nine in a boating accident, a tragedy Jessie has always felt partially responsible for.
