Aha! Gotcha is filled with very different types of puzzles than aha! Insight, which has many problems to solve. This book just presents many fun paradoxes that make you use your head, and while some of them are problems you have to take some time to solve, most are short paradoxical situations that you can think about for a short while and then go on the next page. It is easy to read, and Gardner again shows his skill in explaining interesting phenomena in a clear and interesting way. All the problems are good exercises on logical thinking and introduces various concepts of mathematics and statistics without seeming like you're studying.
Read It Yourself is a series of graded readers designed to give young children a confident and successful start to reading.
Level 2 is for children who are familiar with some simple words and can read short sentences. Each book in this level contains frequently repeated phrases which help children to read more fluently. An interesting and detailed illustration accompanies every page, which aids understanding of the text and encourages interest and enjoyment.
Richard Morris has done a wonderful job of taking what should be a dry
topic and making it very interesting.
The Last Sorcerer details the
discovery of the elements and the people behind these discoveries.
Along the way we meet a number of brilliant eccentrics, would be
charlatans and an interesting collection of scientists and
non-scientists. The chapters are short and punchy. The book flows well.
Waller presents 13 mythical stories in total, starring such scientific icons as Louis Pasteur, Gregor Mendel, Charles Darwin and Alexander Fleming. In most cases, the scientists that were directly involved are shown to manipulate reality to edify their own myths. In the other, maybe more interesting, cases, the myth was created without the participant's intervention. Each story is well researched and the bibliographic sources are listed and correctly credited. For me, each plot was completely unexpected, illuminative and interesting. Waller's CV includes a Masters in human biology, and this explains his proficiency in the complex subjects of biology and medicine. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history and social structure of science.
