Tests and Drills in English Grammar for foreign students
The book is planned very simply, so that there is no real problem of organization of materials. Each lesson is so arranged that the teacher simply starts with the first exercises of each lesson and proceeds through the remaining exercises. English grammar, on the whole, is relatively simple. But the real teaching problem arises from the fact that the teacher must do much more than simply explain the exercises and repeat them once or twice with the students. The students must be taught to use what they are studying. They must be given sufficient practice and repetition so that everything that they study is retained and made an active part of their everyday conversation.
The Remedial Reading Drills are designed primarily to aid children who have become retarded in reading. In applying these exercises the remedial teacher should first determine the status of the child and whether these exercises are applicable to his difficulties. In general, the exercises are most effective with children having the following characteristics: (1) the reading status of the child is below the fourth grade; (2) the child has a severe special reading disability; (3) the child is educable in sound blending; (4) any extreme visual or auditory defects have been corrected; (5) the child is motivated and cooperative.
