The History of Negation in the Languages of Europe and the Mediterranean: Volume I Case StudiesThis is the first book in a two-volume comparative history of negation in the languages of Europe and the Mediterranean. The work integrates typological, general, and theoretical research, documents patterns and directions of change in negation across languages, and examines the linguistic and social factors that lie behind such changes. The first volume presents linked case studies of particular languages and language groups, including French, Italian, English, Dutch, German, Celtic, Slavonic, Greek, Uralic, and Afro-Asiatic.

Goodbye to All That?: A History of Europe Since 1945In the decade after 1945, as the Cold War freeze set in, a new Europe slowly began to emerge from the ruins of the Second World War, based on a broad rejection of the fascist past that had so scarred the continent's recent history. In the East, this new consensus was enforced by Soviet-imposed Communist regimes. In the West, the process was less coercive, amounting more to a consensus of silence. On both sides, much was deliberately forgotten or obscured.

Classics Illustrated 135 Waterloo

The French Revolution of 1789 overthrew our King Louis XVI. In 1804, Napolean Bonaparte became our emperor. Now then years later, the wars by which Napoleon expected to conquer Europe were over. The allied powers of Europe had defeated us. They exiled Napoleon to the island of Elba, and restored the monarchy.

The joy of the people when Louis XVIII came to the throne was unbounded. We had suffered so much misery, and were so weary of battles, that we wished for nothing but to live in peace.

Wild GeeseWild Geese

In range, Wild Geese covers the geese of North America, Europe and Asia, and thus the world species except for the Hawaiian Goose or Ne-Ne. The plan of the book is similar to the author's Ducks of Britain and Europe but distribution, status and migration rightly assume a more extensive role in Wild Geese and the detailed text on those subjects is fully complemented by migration and distribution maps.
