AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF LANGUAGE

AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF LANGUAGEAN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF LANGUAGE

In the study of language the late 1980s may be seen in retrospect as an era of consolidation. No moderately aware eye will

miss the epidemic of encyclopaedias of that time, their didactic sameness masked by a variety of style, even a desperate

individuality. Some spread a single topic (say, dialectology) over an ample volume; some report on a kaleidoscope of topics

under a summary, not always illuminating, heading (say, grammar). Some are terse and sober lexicons; some, like advertisers, seek their targets with a fine typographic frenzy.

Encyclopedia of Occultism and ParapsychologyEncyclopedia of Occultism and Parapsychology

This is a synthesis of two one-volume works:   Encyclopaedia of Psychic Science and Spence's Encyclopaedia of Occultism.  Although I haven't read the entire two volumes, I must say that I'm impressed by the comprehensive nature of the set. It includes articles about modern occult magicians like Isaac Bonewits and doesn't leave out critics of the paranormal such as James Randi. Also check out the 4-vol. Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 24-vol. Man, Myth & Magic  2-vol. Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, and Bernard McGinn's

The Middle Ages: A Concise Encyclopaedia
21

The Middle Ages: A Concise EncyclopaediaDictionaries and encyclopedias on this era proliferate. This volume aims “to provide both the beginner and the specialist with a single volume that presents a summary of current thought on the key protagonists, events and themes” in European history from c.400 to c.1500. The beginner will find about 1000 useful entries, strong on England and France, weak on Spain, Central and Eastern Europe; able on political but weak on social history (e.g., no entry on the family or on marriage).
