A spooky howl pierces the dark night. Is it the wind? Or is it the ghost called La Llorona? Each retelling is designed to appeal to those children who may have high interest but lower reading levels.
A little girl travels from the comforts of her own home to the far reaches of the universe. The journey begins in Maria's house and then moves outward to the street, town, country, continent, hemisphere, planet, solar system, galaxy, and, finally, the universe. With each new widening perspective, children can explore the vastness of the world around them as they discover their own special place in space.
As they play video games inside, children miss out on a world of activity just outside their window. Three children decide to stay in and play video games. They close their shutters, saying "It's so boring outside. Nothing ever happens," and miss seeing a mole pop up through the dirt, a rabbit being chased by a dog and hunter, an altercation between a cat and dog, etc. While these events aren't enough in themselves to convince readers to go play outside, the lesson is worthwhile and may get through to some. The pen-and-ink illustrations are detailed and carefully drawn.
