The Terror: A Novel by Dan Simmons
Book Description
The bestselling author of Ilium and Olympos transforms thetrue story of a legendary Arctic expedition into a thriller worthy ofStephen King or Patrick O'Brian. Their captain's insane vision of a Northwest Passage has kept the crewmenof The Terror trapped in Arctic ice for two years without a thaw. But thereal threat to their survival isn't the ever-shifting landscape of white, the provisions that have turned to poison before they open them, or theship slowly buckling in the grip of the frozen ocean. The real threat iswhatever is out in the frigid darkness, stalking their ship, snatching oneseaman at a time or whole crews, leaving bodies mangled horribly or missingforever. Captain Crozier takes over the expedition after the creature kills itsoriginal leader, Sir John Franklin. Drawing equally on his own strengths asa seaman and the mystical beliefs of the Eskimo woman he's rescued, Croziersets a course on foot out of the Arctic and away from the insatiable beast. But every day the dwindling crew becomes more deranged and mutinous, untilCrozier begins to fear there is no escape from an ever-more-inconceivablenightmare.

Symbol and the Symbolic: Ancient Egypt, Science, and the Evolution of Consciousness
44

Symbolism is the intuitive means of overcoming the limitations of reason. Here Schwaller explains how true progress in human thought can be made only if we call upon the "symbolizing" faculty of intelligence, developed and refined in the temple culture of ancient Egypt and reflected in its hieroglyphs.

The End of Cosmology?
Will the big bang be forgotten? The accelerating cosmic expansion is wiping away every trace of the universe's origin.
When Markets Beat the Polls
Internet-based financial markets may predict elections more reliably than polls do. They can augur future box-office returns and flu seasons, too.
White Matter Matters
Long regarded as passive support for cogitating neurons, the brain's white matter shows that it actively affects learning and mental illness.
The Limits of Quantum Computers
Futuristic quantum computers could be exceptionally fast at certain tasks, but for most problems they would only modestly outclass today's conventional machines.

Облако тегов - Tag Cloud

 ========================

We are happy to introduce our new feature: TAG CLOUD.
We are sure that this implementation will make site navigation much easier and more visually attractive.

Every time a new publication is added, special keywords (aka 'tags') need to be assigned to it. They can be generated automatically or typed manually. These tags can be seen at the bottom of the publication in the main page and are later used to find related publications that have the same tag.
Thus, a click on the 'Fundamentals' tag will take you to the page with all other Englishtips publications that contain the same word 'Fundamentals'.
