A History of Diplomacy

Almost 5,000 years ago, messengers traveled to and from the city-states of Mesopotamia on missions of war and peace. Clay tablets discov­ered in Persia, now known as Iran, tell the story of these early diplomatic missions. Our diplomatic tradition dates back to the cities of ancient Greece, where messengers known as “heralds” were the first diplomats.
