A small primer designed to introduce a youngster to the letters of the alphabet.
These books often take a popular work of literature or some cultural theme to add interest for the young learner.
Hiawatha Alphabet is one such example of those books of old. Last published in 1911 by Rand McNally, it uses the legendary figure of Hiawatha and his life to illustrate the alphabet. Hiawatha, chieftain of the Iroquois, is thought to have lived about 1570. He was the inspiration for the poem Song of Hiawatha (1855) by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Many youngsters were stirred by the tale of how Hiawatha used miraculous powers to protect his people—and the illustrated adventures made learning our ABC's a whole lot easier.
