This book is an attempt to help the ordinary working linguist take full advantage of these technological opportunities. It provides wide-ranging information on Linguistic Computing, in all the senses of that phrase; and it was written specifically for readers with some knowledge of language and linguistics, as well as some curiosity about computing. This description fits, not only linguists per se, but also an expanding group of individuals who are not professional linguists, but who deal computationally with language: among others, programmers and analysts, library information specialists, and academic humanists engaged in the study of texts.
