Explains the complex manner in which the "human noises" we call speech are produced by the vocal organs, transmitted from mouth to ear and processed between ear and brain, which are the three stages which define the spheres of articulatory, acoustic and auditory phonetics. The reader is then introduced to the symbols used in the description and classification of speech sounds and shown how the latter are organized into patterns describable in terms of phonemens and other abstract concepts. Although this book takes most of its examples from English.
Nightmare Academy is a coming-of-age story mixing reality and mystery. Charlie Benjamin would be an average thirteen-year-old except for his unusual situation and "gift." Even in his new world, Charlie has issues fitting in and his "abnormality" pushes him into an adult role. The book's tone is humorous and light even when violence arises and devotion to family and friends is shown. This book is written for ten and up and presents fantasy with a comic touch reminiscent of the Harry Potter series.
English Adjectives of Comparison: Lexical and Grammaticalized Uses
This book is for people studying English linguistics, not for English language learners. The book is concerned with a largely unrecognized grammaticalization process: deictification, or the development from quality-attributing to deictically used adjectives in the English noun phrase. On the basis of the synchronic and diachronic corpus-study of six English adjectives of comparison, deictification is shown to involve unstudied variants of subjectification and decategorialization.
This book examines the uniforms, equipment, history and organisation of the Arab Legion. Air, Sea, Police and National Guard forces are all covered. Uniforms are shown in full illustrated detail.
