Focus Structure in Generative Grammar

Focus Structure in Generative GrammarThe notion of focus structure underlying the present work is essentially that of Lambrecht (1994), who distinguishes what he calls the predicate focus, argument focus and sentence focus types of focus structure. He illustrates this distinction by the A-utterances in (1), where the word in small capitals is the carrier of the primary sentence accent (see Lambrecht 1994:223):
(1) a. predicate focus structure
Q:What happened to your car?
A: My car/It broke down.
b. argument focus structure
Q: I heard your motorcycle broke down?
A: My car broke down.
c. sentence focus structure
Q:What happened?
A: My car broke down.

Developmental Psycholinguistics: On-line methods in Children's language processing (Language Acquisition and Language Disorders) How do infants and young children coordinate information in real time to arrive at sentence meaning from the words and structure of the sentence and from the nonlinguistic context? This volume introduces readers to an emerging field of research, experimental developmental psycholinguistics, and to the four predominant methodologies used to study on-line language processing in children. Authored by key figures in psycholinguistics, neuroscience and developmental psychology, the chapters cover event-related brain potentials, free-viewing eyetracking, looking-while-listening, and reaction-time techniques, also providing a historical backdrop for this line of research.

Secret Agent (Dover Thrift Editions)

Secret Agent (Dover Thrift Editions)After 100 years, Conrad's distinctive novel of espionage and counter-espionage is still the apex of the genre, the indispensable masterpiece. It's bleak, mordant, suspenseful, and funny, and it's wildly under-appreciated.
This is so perfect a spy novel that frankly no other spy novel needed ever to be written. Conrad has said it all. It's tightly plotted, completely plausible except perhaps for a few too-convenient chance meetings on the street, and profoundly insightful into the "politics" of terror. And it's freshly pertinent, even to the point of including an inadvertent suicide bomber.
Joseph Conrad, born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, (1857-1924) was a Polish-born novelist who spent most of his adult life in Britain. He is regarded as one of the greatest English novelists, which is even more notable because he did not learn to speak English well until he was in his 20s. He is recognized as a master prose stylist.
