From Children to Red Hatters: Diverse Images and Issues of Play (Play & Culture Studies)The ten chapters of this book examine play from a variety of perspectives and disciplines (philosophy, sociology, history, child development, animal behavior) and across almost the entire age range of human development (preschoolers through adults). In the first chapter, Gwen Gordon looks at the basic issue of trying to define the concept of play and offers a possibility that not only takes into consideration the activity of children but the activity of atoms and the universe as well.

The Future of Human Nature

The Future of Human NatureRecent developments in biotechnology and genetic research are raising complex ethical questions concerning the legitimate scope and limits of genetic intervention. As we begin to contemplate the possibility of intervening in the human genome to prevent diseases, we cannot help but feel that the human species might soon be able to take its biological evolution in its own hands. 'Playing God' is the metaphor commonly used for this self-transformation of the species, which, it seems, might soon be within our grasp.
In this important new book, Jurgen Habermas - the most influential philosopher and social thinker in Germany today - takes up the question of genetic engineering and its ethical implications and subjects it to careful philosophical scrutiny. His analysis is guided by the view that genetic manipulation is bound up with the identity and self-understanding of the species. We cannot rule out the possibility that knowledge of one's own hereditary factors may prove to be restrictive for the choice of an individual's way of life and may undermine the symmetrical relations between free and equal human beings.

Glas by Jacques Derrida

Glas by Jacques DerridaJacques Derrida is probably the most famous European philosopher alive today. The University of Nebraska Press makes available for the first English translation of his most important work to date, Glas. Its appearance will assist Derrida's readers pro and con in coming to terms with a complex and controversial book. Glas extensively reworks the problems of reading and writing in philosophy and literature; questions the possibility of linear reading and its consequent notions of theme, author, narrative, and discursive demonstration; and ingeniously disrupts the positions of reader and writer in the text.
Glas is extraordinary in many ways, most obviously in its typography.
