Dr. Euler's Fabulous Formula: Cures Many Mathematical IllsDr. Euler's Fabulous Formula: Cures Many Mathematical Ills

What are e, pi, and i, and who was Euler? Now, it is hard for me to believe that there are any literate readers in the world who haven't heard of the transcendental numbers e = 2.71828182... and pi = 3.14159265..., and of the imaginary number i. As for Euler, he was surely one of the greatest of all mathematicians. Making lists of the "greatest" is a popular activity these days, and I would wager that the Swiss-born Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) would appear somewhere among the top five mathematicians of all time.

Geometry and Billiards (Student Mathematical Library)Geometry and Billiards (Student Mathematical Library)Mathematical billiards describe the motion of a mass point in a domain with elastic reflections off the boundary or, equivalently, the behavior of rays of light in a domain with ideally reflecting boundary. From the point of view of differential geometry, the billiard flow is the geodesic flow on a manifold with boundary.

Traditional logic as a part of philosophy is one of the oldest scientific disciplines and can be traced back to the Stoics and to Aristotle. Mathematical logic, however, is a relatively young discipline and arose from the endeavors of Peano, Frege, and others to create a logistic foundation for mathematics. It steadily developed during the twentieth century into a broad discipline with several sub-areas and numerous applications in mathematics, informatics, linguistics and philosophy.

Foundation MathsFoundation Maths

Foundation Maths has been written for students taking higher or further education courses, who have not specialised in mathematics on post-16 qualifications and need to use mathematical tools in their courses. It is ideally suited for those studying marketing, business studies, management, science, engineering, computer science, social science, geography, combined studies and design. It will be useful for those who lack confidence and need careful, steady guidance in mathematical methods.
