History of English Literature, Vol.2, Part 2 (From The Fourteenth Century To The Death Of Surrey) by Bernhard Ten Brink
translated from the German by L. Dora Schmitz (Rare Book Collection)
The first volume of Bernhard Ten Brink's work reviewed the history of English literature from the ancient hynmic poetry down to "Piers Plowman's Vision." The first part of the second is devoted to Wycliffe and Chaucer, the influence of the Italian Renaissance, and the earliest English drama.
Many topics receive from Ten Brink extremely conscientious consideration. His work is thorough, but its merit is principally in the intensity of the art with which it has retraced the influence of the Renaissance in English literature.
The object of this book is to attempt to tell the story of England's history for young children. Important events have been given in fuller detail than is usual, so as to awaken an interest in them, though no story has been told simply because it is interesting. The second part is intended for children a little older than those for whom the first part was written. Political changes, some of them of a complicated kind, occurred from time to time. Isaac Asimov - Foundation
first book in foundation series
Foundation is the first book in Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy (later expanded into The Foundation Series). It is a collection of five short stories, which were first published together as a book by Gnome Press in 1951. It also appeared in 1955 as part of Ace Double D-110 under the title "The 1,000-Year Plan." Four of the stories were originally published in Astounding Magazine (with different titles) between 1942 and 1944, and the fifth was added when they first appeared in book form. Decades later, Asimov wrote two prequels to it. Later writers have added authorized tales to the series.
