Computer Games as Educational and Management Tools: Uses and Approaches
Though once considered purely for their entertainment value, computer and online games have applications as learning tools in learning in a variety of different environments.
This volume evolved from a symposium held at the Eleventh International Congress on Sedimentology which met at Hamilton, Ontario in August 1982 under the auspices of the International Association of Sedimentologists. The objective of the symposium was to provide a forum for discussion of the links between hydrodynamics and sedimentation in both modern and ancient wave-dominated coastal environments.
Optimal Learning Environments to Promote Student Engagement analyzes the psychological, social, and academic phenomena comprising engagement, framing it as critical to learning and development. Drawing on positive psychology, flow studies, and theories of motivation, the book conceptualizes engagement as a learning experience, explaining how it occurs (or not) and how schools can adapt to maximize it among adolescents. Examples of empirically supported environments promoting engagement are provided, representing alternative high schools, Montessori schools, and extracurricular programs.
This text is designed for students and anyone else with an interest in the history of life on our planet. The author describes the biological evolution of Earth’s organisms, and reconstructs their adaptations to the life they led, and the ecology and environment in which they functioned. On the grand scale, Earth is a constantly changing planet, continually presenting organisms with challenges. Changing geography, climate, atmosphere, oceanic and land environments set a stage in which organisms interact with their environments and one another, with evolutionary change an inevitable result.
The book consists of three parts. The first part, entitled 'Play and Grounding' looks at play as a context likely to reveal the essence of grounding. Grounding is the embodiment of understanding things/actions in relation to and/or integrated with their environments. The second part, entitled 'Optimal Experience and Emotion' shows the close association between grounding and emotion. The third part, entitled 'Pedagogy and Technology' elaborates on new technologies (the computer and Internet) and on concepts and pedagogical methodologies supported by such technologies. The contributions in this volume demonstrate the great potential for the further development.
