Handbook of Discourse Processes
56

Handbook of Discourse ProcessesThis Handbook is a comprehensive overview of the multidisciplinary field of discourse processes.

The editors hope to foster a more interdisciplinary approach to discourse processing with this Handbook, while simultaneously developing an appreciation within the field for multiple methods of establishing rigorous scientific claims.

The field of discourse processes is currently fueled by seven dominant approaches:
* discourse psychology;
* corpus analysis;
* computational discourse;
* discourse technologies;
* conversation analysis;
* hybrid qualitative and quantitative approaches; and
* cultural foundations.

The contributors also discuss future trends in research, including corpus analyses, the integration of neuroscience with discourse research, and the development of more advanced computer technologies for analyzing discourse.

Academic Voices: Across languages and disciplines (Pragmatics and Beyond New Series) This book explores how the voices of authors and other researchers are manifested in academic discourse, and how the author handles the polyphonic interaction between these various parties. It represents a unique study of academic discourse in that it takes a doubly contrastive approach, focusing on the two factors of discipline and language at the same time. It is based on a large electronic corpus of 450 research articles from three disciplines (economics, linguistics and medicine) in three languages (English, French and Norwegian).

Political Discourse in the Media: Cross-cultural Perspectives (Pragmatics & Beyond New Series)The goal of this volume is to examine the phenomenon of media communication from a cross-cultural perspective. The focus in the contributions is on the analysis of political discourse in the media which, in mediatized mass democracies, is for most people the only way in which they ever encounter politics. The cross-cultural perspective adopted in this collection of papers involves two basic approaches: on the one hand, culture-specific discourse practices of journalists and politicians are described and compared.

Media Talk: Spoken Discourse on TV and Radio
52

Media Talk: Spoken Discourse on TV and Radio Over the past twenty years, a focus on broadcast talk has emerged as an innovative approach to studying the media. Adapting perspectives derived from Discourse and Conversation Analysis, this approach investigates distinctive forms of mediated speech on TV and radio. It provides original insights into the ways in which broadcasting stages 'discourse events' (interviews, debates, commentaries and verbal performances) which are designed to attract and involve overhearing audiences.
Media Talk is the first book to provide a comprehensive review of this important work, in terms which are accessible to students and non-specialist readers. It is however, much more than a text book, being augmented throughout by the author's own research into contemporary, sometimes controversial developments. An introduction to this area of media studies, and its distinctive methodologies, is followed by chapters on news talk, political talk, sports talk, radio DJ talk, talk shows, celebrity interviews and 'reality TV'. The book is illustrated with examples from British and American radio and television.
