It all began one morning in the smoking room of the Department of
Health and Welfare.
That was where happily married Jack met the lovely
Grace. At first smoking was all they had in common. But soon they were
sharing a lot more. Love, as well as cigarette smoke, was in the
air.
But when Miriam, Jack's wife, began to suspect that his feelings
had changed, everything became a lot more dangerous. Because Miriam was
a woman who liked to get her own way, and this time she was playing to
win.
Tim Vicary - The Coldest Place on Earth
In the summer of 1910, a race began. A race to be the first man at the South Pole, in Antarctica. Robert Falcon Scott, an Englishman, left London in his ship, the Terra Nova, and began the long journey south. Five days later, another ship also began to travel south. And on this ship was Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian.
But Antarctica is the coldest place on earth, and it is a long, hard journey over the ice to the South Pole. Some of the travellers never returned to their homes again.
This is the story of Scott and Amundsen, and of one of the most famous and dangerous races in history.
Maus : A Survivor's Tale : My Father Bleeds History/Here My Troubles Began
Art Spiegelman's "Maus: A Survivor's Tale" is a unique and
unforgettable work of literature. This two-volume set of book-length
comics (or "graphic novels," if you prefer) tells the story of the
narrator, Artie, and his father Vladek, a Holocaust survivor. "Maus" is
thus an important example of both Holocaust literature and of the
graphic novel. The two volumes of "Maus" are subtitled "My Father
Bleeds History" and "And Here My Troubles Began"; they should be read
together to get the biggest impact.
