The Long WalkThe Long Walk

One hundred teenage boys (picked at random from a large pool of applicants) are chosen to participate in an annual walking contest called "The Long Walk". Each walker must maintain a constant speed of no less than four miles an hour, or he receives a warning. Warnings are given for a variety of other offenses, including assaulting another walker or deviating from the walk's set course. Walkers may "lose" warnings by walking for one hour without being warned. If, however, a Walker with three warnings slows down again, or breaks any other rule, he is shot by the soldiers monitoring the event from halftracks.

Emily Giffin, the beloved author of such novels as Something Borrowed and Where We Belong, returns with an extraordinary story of love and loyalty.  Thirty-three-year-old Shea Rigsby has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas—a small college town that lives and dies by football, a passion she unabashedly shares. Raised alongside her best friend, Lucy, the daughter of Walker’s legendary head coach, Clive Carr, Shea was too devoted to her hometown team to leave. Instead she stayed in Walker for college, even taking a job in the university athletic department after graduation, where she has remained for more than a decade.

Black Milk: On the Conflicting Demands of Writing, Creativity, and MotherhoodBlack Milk: On the Conflicting Demands of Writing, Creativity, and Motherhood

After the birth of her first child, Elif Shafak experienced a profound personal crisis. Plagued by guilt, anxiety, and bewilderment about her new maternal role, the acclaimed novelist stopped writing for the first time in her life. As she plummeted into post-partum depression, Shafak looked to the experiences of other prominent female writers—including Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, Simone de Beauvoir, and Alice Walker—for help navigating the conflict between motherhood and artistic creation in a male-dominated society.
