It is a commonplace to say that the meaning of text is more than the conjunction of the meaning of its constituents. But, what are the rules governing its interpretation, and what are the constraints that define well-formed discourse? Answers to these questions can be given from various perspectives. In this edited volume, leading scientists in the field investigate these questions from structural, cognitive, and computational perspectives.
This book contains some well-formatted entertaining plays that allow children to act out the stories while the teacher feeds them lines. I tried out the warm-up exercises and two other plays, "Friends 1 and 2 have an argument" and "Goldilocks and the Many Bears" on children ages 4-9 and the kids had a great time! I asked the kids what they thought of the plays and they said, "They were fun!" The kids and I look forward to performing more of these charming little plays.

The three major macronutrients are proteins, carbohydrates and lipids (oils and fats). This book is devoted to lipids, which are an important part of life for all of us. They are a significant part of all living systems, and of our diet, and they furnish the functional constituents of all personal care products and those materials by which we keep our homes and environment clean and wholesome. What are these materials in molecular terms? Where do they come from? What happens to them between the harvesting of crops and the appearance of the oils and fats in different products in the supermarket?

The objective of this edition remains the same as the two previous editions — to provide a practical reference for fats and oils processing and formulation for effective food processor, foodservice, and household applications. It is designed to be an information source for personnel and students of fats and oils processing as wellas the personnel of the user industries. Most of the additions for this edition are related to nutrition. Dietary recommendations for fat and fatty acids continue to evolve as a better understanding of the role of dietary lipids in human health is gained. Processing and formulation techniques are reviewed to help determine how to achieve the most favorable nutritional characteristics while maintaining functionality for the various food applications.
A compelling journey through history, mathematics, and philosophy, charting humanity’s struggle against randomness. Our lives are played out in the arena of chance. However little we recognize it in our day-to-day existence, we are always riding the odds, seeking out certainty but settling—reluctantly—for likelihood, building our beliefs on the shadowy props of probability. Chances Are is the story of man’s millennia-long search for the tools to manage the recurrent but unpredictable—to help us prevent, or at least mitigate, the seemingly random blows of disaster, disease, and injustice. In these pages, we meet the brilliant individuals who developed the first abstract formulations of probability, as well as the intrepid visionaries who recognized their practical applications—from gamblers to military strategists to meteorologists to medical researchers, from blackjack to our own mortality.
